Nvidia AI research has unleashed GauGAN, which allows you to create segmentation maps which it uses to produce photorealistic landscapes.

I used that to thumbnail and create some interesting directions which gave me a starting point - also they inspired directions I wouldn't have though of.

From there I photobashed a moody Loch environment and combined it with 3D blockouts to create the Alcubierre facility. Then it was a case of dropping textures to the 3D in photoshop.
